WIN OR LOSE
POETRY BY: JOSEPH MAXWELL SPENCER
What do you know about drugs?
Why is your heart tipping fast and hard?
Flexing a bicep pumped up with weights
Why do you feel smart on drugs?
Why do you feel you’re high?
Why do you think you’re Jet Li?
Arnie and Sly Stallone all rolled into one
You’re having a great time, you think
You’re smart and tough, you reckon
Everyone admiring how cool you are
You tell yourself every now and then
All the values and decision making
Acquired along the course of life
From parents, school teachers and aunts
Right from wrong
Good from bad
Smart from stupid
All forgotten for living in this virtual state
Drugs and alcohol turned into a dependency for you
Many people lost their lives you know
You lost your decision making processes
No money in your pocket, no doubt
No job, no life, no nothing
Another druggie walking the streets
It could be alcohol ruining your life
It could be legal-high or spice
Giving you mental health issues
One always leads to the other, oh yes!
From Whitney Houston to Kurt Cobain
Drug addicted celebrities and the like
Puking and scratching your ass and balls
If cards turned and you wound up in prison
That would be life dealing you a jail-card
It may be a chance to change your life
Drug counsellors awaits you at Her-Majesty rehab
All will be placed at your finger-tips on-call
No part of us is stuck in a world you know
The door to absurdity need to be welded shut
Prison time denotes a time to be bothered
But if you don’t win the race against addiction
You’ll always be the horse that ran the race
Win or lose is the course of life
