WHAT THEY TELL US!
POETRY BY: JOSEPH MAXWELL SPENCER
They tell us,
The pen is mightier than the sword.
But I ask,
What if the pen is without ink,
and the sword remain sharp as a razor?
……………….
They tell us,
Immigration perpetuates healthy society.
But I ask,
what if migration becomes,
the source of indignity?
……………….
They tell us,
Insanity is the error of reasoning.
But I ask,
What if the reasoning of sanity,
were an absurd folly?
……………….
They tell us,
Prisons are overpopulated.
But I ask,
What if it were the population,
that were being over-imprisoned?
……………….
They tell us,
The head is the object of reason.
But I ask,
What if the head that will,
become a skull is already empty?
……………….
They tell us,
History is an objective fact.
But I ask,
What if the objective fact has been,
discontinuous and displaced in history?
……………….
They tell us,
Justice is for the oppressed creature.
But I ask,
What if justice has been something,
done to the powerful and for the rich?
……………….
They tell us,
Punishment must fit the crime.
But I ask,
What if crime is without illusions,
and punishment is becoming disillusioned?
……………….
They tell us,
To leave our troubled past behind.
But I ask,
What if the past,
simply doesn’t left us?
……………….
They tell us,
The world is overpopulated.
But I ask,
What if it’s the population,
Simply fused together in small spaces?
……………….
They tell us,
Humans are equal.
But I ask,
What if I broadly accuse,
the human race of social inequality?
